    The Plant

The Babassu Tree is a tall palm tree with large feathery-looking palm leaves that grow wild in northern regions of Brazil. The tree provides many different kinds of materials that are used for a wide variety of applications.
The fruit matures from the tree's flowers, blooming between January and April. Once the fruit fully ripens, it falls to the ground. The fruit has 4 layers, the tough shell-like outer layer and the middle layer, which is mostly starchy and surrounds the third layer, which is very hard and thick. This inner layer, which is very difficult to crack open, encases the protected seeds. Each fruit can have between 2 to 8 seeds.
The Babassu palm requires between 10 and 12 years to produce enough fruit to harvest the seeds. The tree reaches productive maturity between 15 and 20 years, with an average life of 35. And it has three stages of growth.
Babassu grows in dense jungles, and gathering and transporting fruits is arduous work. Machines are often used to help crack the hard outer layer of the seed encasement, but removing the actual seed is usually done by hand.

    The Oil

When making skin care products, we can easily substitute coconut oil with babassu and get the same results. Babassu Oil has a similar look, feel, and therapeutic properties to coconut oil. It liquifies in warm temperatures and solidifies when cooled. The oil is expeller pressed from the kernels of the fruit, which is about 6 inches long. The kernels can contain upward of 80% oil. Cracking the 1-inch thick shell of the Babassu fruit is very difficult and can take almost 5 tons of force to crack!
